Finding good cheap hotel accommodation in Dubai in 2007 is difficult and likely to stay that way until at least 2008. If you are looking for a good deal on accommodation, your best option is to try and get a package deal with the airline you use to fly to Dubai. Flights to and from Dubai

Many airlines have flights to Dubai in addition to all those transit flights going through Dubai. UAE based carriers include:

  • Emirates Airlines is the Dubai based carrier operating out of Dubai International Airport.
  • Etihad Airlines started operations in 2005, flies out of Abu Dhabi International Airport.
  • Air Arabia started operations in 2004, flies out of Sharjah International Airport - a "no-frills" airline.
  • RAK Airways - expected to start flights sometime in 2007, flying out of Ras Al Khaimah International Airport.
  • Jazeera Airways is a Kuwaiti airline which started to use Dubai as a hub for direct flights to some destinations from early February 2007.
  • Gulf Air is a Bahrain-Oman (80:20 split from 01 May 2007) airline and has flights from Bahrain, Muscat, Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Abu Dhabi was a partner but pulled out in 2006.
Cheap holidays to Dubai

The cheapest way to have a holiday in Dubai is to bum a bed off someone you know. Preferably a relative since they'll still be related even if you fall out with them, and you can probably invade their homes again in a couple of years. Friendships can and do fade away unfortunately.

With the ubiquity (or plague according to some) of the internet, you can make friends online to replace the ones you lost last time you visited Dubai, and hopefully they'll offer you a place to kip before your next visit to Dubai. Dubai FAQs staff all have unsanitary living habits and terrible BO just in case you were thinking of trying that scam on us.

For more realistic and less annoying options, try the airlines mentioned above for package deals including a hotel but don't bother with a hire or rental car unless you've visited Dubai before. Traffic conditions are unpleasant, it's difficult to navigate around the place, and taxis are relatively cheap. For journeys further afield, consider renting a car for a day once you get here.

Charter flights are rare. There are some from Russia and other Eastern European countries to Terminal 2 of Dubai International Airport, and there's a handful to Ras Al Khaimah International Airport.

Passenger Airline Flights to and from Dubai

Airline companies operating flights to and from Dubai International Airport include (with destination cities):

Air Arabia

Air Arabia - fly from Sharjah, not Dubai. Allow at least 100 dhs each way in a taxi from Dubai to Sharjah airport. A "no-frills" airline with routes around the Middle East and Asia in countries Afghanistan, Bahrain, Egypt, India, Iran, Jordan, Kazakhstan/Khazakstan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Nepal, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Turkey, Yemen. Destinations include:

Ahmedabad (from 03 Apr 2007), Aleppo, Alexandria, Almaty, Amman, Assiut, Astana, Bangalore, Bahrain, Beirut, Chennai (02 Nov 2006), Chittagong (18 Jun 2007), Coimbatore CJB (01 October 2007), Colombo, Damman, Doha, Istanbul, Jaipur, Jeddah, Kabul, Karachi (04 Mar 2007), Kathmandu, Khartoum, Kochi, Koneyammanputhhur (same as Coimbatore CJB), Kozhikode / Calicut (26 Feb 2008), Kuwait, Mumbai (Bombay), Muscat, Nagpur, New Delhi DEL (31 Mar 2008) Peshawar (07 Mar 2007), Riyadh, Sanaa/Sana'a, Tehran, Thiruvananthapuram (05 Nov 2006).

In January 2008, Air Arabia launched a tie-up with Yeti Airlines in Nepal to provide more low-cost air travel.

Emirates Airlines (EK)

Emirates Airlines EK is a Dubai based carrier launched in 1985. As of beginning March 2008, EK has flights on routes to 99 cities in 62 different countries, with about 100 flights a week just to the UK (91 in January 2007). Destinations include:

Flights to Male and Colombo are code-share with Sri Lankan airlines - 4 digits instead of 3 in the flight number tells you it's an SL plane.

Etihad Airways

Etihad Airways doesn't actually fly out of Dubai but they arrange transport from Dubai to Abu Dhabi airport. IATA code is AUH, not ABD although ABD is commonly used as an abbreviation for the city of Abu Dhabi. Etihad fly from Al Ain (AAN) with a stop in Abu Dhabi. Usually a little cheaper than Emirates Airlines. Instead of Economy, Business, and First Class, Etihad has the Coral (economy), Pearl (business), and Diamond (first) Zones. Confused? We are.
