Waitrose UAE and Middle East
Waitrose first established a presence in Dubai with the opening of a large store in The Dubai Mall in November 2008. Britpats were excited, other expats wondered what the fuss was all about. For those who don't know, Waitrose originates from the UK, and in the UAE is similar to Spinneys, which is probably not a surprise given that Spinneys and Waitrose had established a partnership with Waitrose products being supplied in Spinneys stores.
Waitrose plans to have 20 supermarkets in Dubai, the UAE, and the Gulf region by 2010, or 20 stores in the UAE depending on which report you read. One report says that 18 Spinneys supermarkets will be rebranded as Waitrose stores by 2010. As of March 2009, there are 2 Waitrose stores in Dubai. Waitrose stores in the UAE are operated by Fine Fare Food Market LLC under license from Waitrose Ltd in the UK.
Waitrose Bahrain
Waitrose will open a store at the Bahrain Villamar at the Harbour development in 2010. Store area about 837 sq meters (9000 sq feet) which is relatively small. Villamar @ the Harbour completion expected by late 2010 (press release 29 March 2009)
Waitrose UK
Waitrose is a supermarket chain owned by the UK based John Lewis, a retail group. Waitrose UK started in 1904 and as of March 2009, has 198 branches in the UK.
