Youth Hostels in Dubai and UAE

For backpackers and others looking for budget accommodation, there are youth hostels in Dubai (two), and also Sharjah, Fujairah (Fujeirah), and Khorfakkan. To join the Youth Hostel Association, membership costs 150 dhs (you can do this at the youth hostel) or you can stay as a non-member at a higher rate per night. Maximum length of stay is supposed to be only 3 nights.
The UAE government website said several more hostels were planned for 2000 but there doesn't seem to be any further information available about that.
Rates were correct as of June 2007 (according to UAE YHA website). Accommodation costs have been spiralling upwards in the UAE and especially Dubai through 2006 and 2007 so check with hostel for latest prices.
Booking is not easy - getting an email response seems to be a rare thing, and online booking is allegedly being set up (but has been like that for a year or two). A phone call is your best bet.
Maximum stay is 3 days, reception is open 24 hrs per day, alcohol and smoking are not allowed.

- Facilities include A/C rooms, coffee shop, tennis, 24 hr TV lounge with satellite television, laundry, swimming pool, internet and even horse riding (at least that's what their website says). Charges are 50-165 dhs per night (including breakfast) depending on which hostel, membership status, and share basis. Rooms have two or three beds.
- There are three hostels at the Dubai location, cleverly named Hostel A, B and C. Hostel A is the new one, and the most expensive, with reasonably comfortable rooms including own bathroom, TV, fridge.
- There is a public bus service with a stop outside the hostel - cost is 1-2 dhs for buses to most places in Dubai. Bus route map available here from the Dubai Municipality (but it's not very clear - maybe one day they'll make it legible).
- Taxi fare from airport is about 30-40 dhs.
- The UAE YHA website says catch bus 401 from Dubai International Airport Terminal 1, (not 402 - it goes to the other side of Dubai Creek) to the Al Sabkha bus station in Deira and then bus number 13 or 17 (both follow same route to Al Qusais bus station) to the hostel. This would take you a couple of hours or more with the heavily congested traffic in that part of Deira, Dubai.
- A better alternative is bus 34 from Al Rashidiya, past the airport and up Al Nahda Road past the youth hostel to Al Ghusais (Al Qusais) Industrial Area. Approx every 30 mins between 0730 and 2200.
- If you're exiting from Terminal 2, take a taxi, it should only be a few minutes and less than 30 dhs.
- Single women may feel a uncomfortable staying in the youth hostel in Dubai on their own. It's not your typical European alpine retreat full of young Swedish backpackers.
