• Name of institute does not always indicate if it is a university or college - some 'universities' offer qualifications that are not highly regarded, some 'colleges' offer qualifications that are very highly regarded.
• The curriculum will give an indication of student mix. Faculty are usually international.
• Ratings are a subjective guide only (see institute's detail page).
• Student rating is an indication of the value of an academic qualification either to the job market or for further study.
• Lecturer rating reflects employment satisfaction. Three stars means the salary is usually paid on time and is sufficient to live on, accommodation (if provided) is liveable, the institute is not completely devoid of resources, there is at least some opportunity to educate students. Five stars mean motivated students (mostly), good opportunities for professional development, school is well-resourced, professional, supportive and trustworthy management, very good salary and accommodation package.

Notes for students and lecturers when considering choosing a college or university

• Fees may vary substantially depending on the course and course requirements. Transport, visa, accommodation (if provided) will normally cost additional fees.
• Students should investigate how valuable a qualification from their prospective institute is in terms of finding a job and/or continuing with study elsewhere. The college or university itself is probably not the best source of unbiased information - especially if they are a profit-making institution.
• Universities and colleges should be licensed to operate by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MoHE, MHE, MoHESR or MHESR). It's not a guarantee of a world class education but it's better than going somewhere not licenced. The Commission for Academic Accreditation has a list of licensed institutes (link) which is sometimes available.
• Some institutes are more flexible with entry requirements than others - the level of flexibility increase as the quality of education decreases and desire for fees income increases.
• Lecturers should check carefully what the salary package includes. Most overseas hire packages will include accommodation (which can vary from luxurious to slum), medical (which can also vary substantially - a government health card is only regarded as a bare minimum), return flights once a year (if the college or university insists on making bookings for you, this can be an aggravating experience). Some institutes will pay extra allowances for transport and utilities.
• Teachers and instructors on local contract hires will normally not be offered any of the above and may find it difficult financially if they have to cover their own accommodation costs - especially in Dubai and Abu Dhabi where rents are quite high.
