St Andrews / BILD closed and reopened (September 2012)
  • 19 Oct 2012 - The National reported that Fugitive businessman Christopher Reynolds has been deported to Dubai from Oman, where he was arrested in connection with claims that he absconded with funds from the special needs school he owned. And quoted an anonymous spokesman from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs as saying "We can confirm the arrest in Oman of an Australian man, 60, and his female travelling companion, 62 ... We understand the pair have been deported by Omani authorities to the country from which they arrived."
  • 12 Sep 2012 - The National reported that In an email to The National, 60-year-old Christopher Reynolds claims a bitter dispute with his former wife over child maintenance was to blame for last week's temporary closure of the school. Dr Reynolds was apparently the owner and managing director of St Andrews, and left the UAE to go to Australia. The story sounds messy and complicated.
  • 09 Sep 2012 - Dubai Education Company or LLC, an education provider in Dubai, has taken over the operation of BILD Dubai and the school has reopened. New owner is Buti Saeed Al Ghandi (or Butti Saeed Al Gandi, of Al Ghandi Investment Company Group?). A new principal, Kamal Fodil, has been appointed. He was previously vice-president of student affairs at the Canadian University of Dubai (another Dubai Education establishment). Headteacher is Barbara Blake? Previous owners were Dr Chris Reynolds and Sheena Reynolds, previous head was Dr Chris Reynolds (Director).
  • 06 Sep 2012 - Gulf News reported that the school had closed amid accusations that its owner Dr. Christopher Reynolds has fled to Australia with all the funds. The report also said that Sources in the Ministry also claimed that the institute’s licence was not renewed for this year, which could not be officially confirmed. However, on the bright side, apparently steps were being taken to try to reopen the school. The Manager of the Special Needs Department at the Ministry of Social Affairs, Wafa Hamad Bin Sulaiman, was quoted as saying "We are trying to support the school in whatever way we can and we will find a solution. We are also working with different authorities and school officials and we assure parents that the school will be back in operation"
  • 05 Sep 2012 - BILD St Andrews School in Dubai did not reopen for the new school year. An email sent to (some) parents apparently said "It is with the utmost regret that I have to inform you that St Andrews School will not be reopening tomorrow, Wednesday 5th September 2012 as the owner, Christopher Reynolds, has left the country and absconded with all the funds." Other parents reportedly didn't find out until they arrived at the school in the morning to find the gates locked. Unknown what the situation is with BILD branches in other emirates.
05 May 2010
  • BILD has branches and centres in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah recently opened. See the following pages for more information
  • Presumably BILD Dubai is not related to the British Institute for Learning & Development in Bristol, UK (website www.thebild.org).
  • According to a 24 April 2010 report in The National, annual tuition fees are AED 72,000 - "... the Dh72,000 ($19,600) annual cost of studying at the institute full-time with therapy ..." Previous information was AED 34,500-62,500 for 2007-2008.
  • School operates grades 1 to 9, small class sizes, follows the British or UK International Primary Curriculum (IPC).
14 December 2008
  • The British Institute for Learning Development (BILD) telephone numbers updated. Previous information was tel +971-4-3982246 and fax +971-4-3983340.
  • The BILD curriculum is managed by St Andrews College Group so occasionally references to the St Andrews International School in Dubai are seen.
  • Also called St Andrews British Institute for Learning Development or St Andrews International School in Dubai or similar?
09 July 2007
  • BILD centre was located in Satwa but moving to Jumeirah / Safa near Park 'n' Shop or Spinneys Al Wasl Rd for September 2007. Tel number might have changed.
  • BILD says they are a "Talented Children Development School" specialising in dyslexia, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), and dyspraxia.
  • BILD also accept children with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), which probably sounds a bit obvious, and autism (not confirmed with BILD).
  • Seems to have a good reputation for special needs students looking for somewhere other than a mainstream school environment.
  • Initial assessment cost is 3300 dhs.
  • New registration fee 500 dhs, annual administration fee of 3000 dhs. Check fees with school, some variation depending on whether day student or afternoon student.
  • Emirates Today (a UAE based newspaper) carried a lengthy article about some BILD child development research that yielded surprising results after a modified learning program. Children with learning difficulties made greater than expected progress.
  • Employment possibilites include Teacher, Occupational Therapist, Speech Therapist, Educational Psychologist. Salary information above not for teacher positions (amount unknown).
