  • Belford University Dubai or UAE does not exist as far as we know. No listing found on the UAE MOHESR website for accredited universities in the UAE, no contact details found in the UAE Yellow Pages.
  • However, there is a Belford University in the USA that offers degrees bought online and awarded on the basis of life experience. A method of awarding degrees that some call a scam, or fraudulent.
  • The UAE connection to Belford University is that apparently their degree certificates are printed in, and mailed from Dubai, UAE to successful students (or at least ones who have paid the required fees).
  • A Khaleej Times (KT) report with the headline "Revealed: FAKE Degrees" on 26 April 2009 said that Another company, which also claims to print degrees in Dubai, is Belford University. In an online chat, student adviser ‘Ken Rogers' said that it was cheaper to print degrees here. "It's cost effective," he said. "Documents being mailed out in Asia and Middle East are being printed in Dubai. This is because it costs us $69 to ship the documents from here to UAE and over there it cost us only $20."
  • In the same report, the KT also said (referring to the problem of people attempting to use fake degrees): However, the problem persists. In October last year 68 Emiratis were blacklisted from the US for buying qualifications from online ‘degree mills'. Authorities in the UAE at the time said that those caught using fake degrees could be punished with up to 24 years in prison.
  • BU claims to be accredited by the International Accreditation Agency for Online Universities (IAAOU) and the Universal Council for Online Education Accreditation (UCOEA). Neither body is recognised by UAE authoriteis as valid for accrediting university level qualifications. Nor are they recognised by the official USA organisations, United States Department of Education (USDE) and the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
  • BU websites are at www.belforduniversity.org and www.belforduniversity.net but not www.belforduniversity.com (which is spam).
  • Note that because Belford University is not recognised by the UAE ministry, or by international accrediting bodies that the UAE accepts as authoritative, having a BU degree is unlikely to be seen as a valid tertiary level qualification for the purposes of obtaining employment in the UAE, and a UAE residence visa and work permit where a degree is a requirement. Confirm with your employer or potential employer in the UAE, and the Ministry of Labour in the UAE before you start "studying" for a Belford University degree.
  • The Houston Press reported on 20 July 2006 that David Linkletter of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board said the board reported Belford to the state Attorney General's office in March. The board also reported another degree mill, Rochville University (www.rochvilleuniversity.org), which appears to be operated by the same people. "This is not a legitimate institute of higher education," Linkletter says from Austin. "No legitimate university offers a complete degree on the basis of one's life experience. I particularly like the 'order now' button on their Web site, which is another clue...To the extent that Belford University is in Texas, it is operating in violation of the Texas Education Code."
